MEMS Groundbreaking

In celebration of National EMS Week the Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) proudly broke ground on May 19, for the organization’s new headquarters. “For more than 20 years, we have been able to sustain operations in our current facility but as Central Arkansas grows and technologies advance, we need to make sure that our facility is up to date so we can continue to meet the needs of Central Arkansas,” states Executive Director Jon Swanson. With approximately 250 employees, MEMS services over 525,000 residents within a 2,100 square mile coverage area. With over 50 ambulances and support vehicles, MEMS responds to more than 90,000 calls a year with an annual operating budget of 23.5 million.

The new 38,000 square foot headquarters will be state of the art. The new facility will include an EF4 tornado rated shelter that will contain MEMS dispatch, Arkansas Trauma Communications Center, and the IT department. In addition, the new facility will include a state of the art training department, on site fueling station, and a large kitchen area capable of providing multiple meals in times of disaster.

MEMS provides emergency and non-emergency services to Pulaski, Faulkner, Grant and Lonoke counties. Providing over 30,000 hours of training to staff and special services including Special Operations Response Team, Bike Response Team, and SWAT Tactical Medic Team. Also the MEMS Honor Guard has been extremely helpful when ever requested by the AEMTA in times of color presentation or funerals. Congratulations to MEMS on their latest endeavor.
